Setting up a connection

Diedrich IR-series roast machines (w/ Z2.5 automation) will need to be equipped with an Ethernet switch. The Ethernet switch must have a minimum of 3 ports.

Diedrich uses a Stride SE2-SW5U Ethernet switch. It requires an additional power supply with wired connections. Other switches or routers may be used as well, but might not fulfill industry standards.

Note: We recommend an Ethernet switch over a router; a switch is usually plug & play whereas a router needs to be configured.

The EDS-205 Series Ethernet switch is also rated to operate at temperatures ranging from -10 to 60°C, and is rugged enough for harsh industrial environments.

The schematic above serves as reference of the connection for IR-series roast machines before an Ethernet switch (Stride SE2-SW5U) has been installed.

  1. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from LAN2 (refer to the dotted line), then use the now free end from the Ethernet cable to connect the MicroLogix 1100 PLC to the Ethernet switch.

  2. Connect the HMI touchscreen to the Ethernet switch.

  3. Connect the Ethernet switch to your computer (Cropster).

Static IP address configuration - MacOS

    Creating a new network location

    1. Go to > System Preferences > Network
    2. Identify the Network connection item that refers to the connection to your machine and select that item.
If you are not sure which icon refers to the roast machine, simply disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable and check which icon changes its status.
    3. Open the Locations drop-down menu and click Edit Locations...
    4. Create a new location by clicking the + sign and name it after your machine, e.g. Diedrich.
    5. Click Done to confirm.

The statuses next to the network connection item will change to Not connected. After setting the static IP address the status will say Connected again.

    Configuring the static IP address

    1. Make sure the Network connection item that refers to the connection to your machine is still selected.
    2. Open the Configure IPv4 dropdown and choose Manually.
    3. Enter the specific IP Address for your roaster
      • IP Address: 192.168.251.42
      • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
      • Leave the rest blank
    4. Click the Apply button to confirm the changes.

On Diedrich IR models, Airflow control is limited to 0%, 50% and 100% only. Any airflow settings in between won't be taken into account.

When controlling gas and airflow from Roasting Intelligence (RI), the values on the Diedrich HMI change with a delay of several seconds; this is only affects the display of the values. The roast machine reacts to gas and airflow changes from RI usually within 1-2 seconds.

      Troubleshooting

If the RI indicates No sources connected and/or you cannot see any measurements, please check the following:

      • Is the static IP address configured correctly?
      • Does the IP address of your roaster differ from the default?
      • Is the ethernet cable connected to the switch or router of the roasting machine?
Do not connect it to the ethernet port of the roaster's HMI (touch screen).
If the RI indicates Sources connected but you cannot see any measurements, please check the following:
      • Is the Diedrich roast machine "Cropster Ready"?
This is indicated by the "Cropster Replay" button on the HMI display.

Note: The Cropster Replay button is only shown when the roaster is in Manual mode; Auto mode will turn the Cropster Replay button off making the button not visible!

      • Do the roast machine's PLC and HMI software version match the required versions (ending in "_C")?

      Are the control sliders unresponsive?

If the gas and airflow values are shown, but the roast machine does not react to changes of the control sliders in RI, verify that the Cropster Replay button is switched on.

Diedrich roast machines w/ sensor package

Depending on your roast machine's model, year and the Diedrich sensor package included with the machine, you may, or may not be able to track temperatures for Exhaust, Inlet, and/or Drum. Learn more about how to set up Exhaust, Inlet, and Drum temperatures.
