What is the Between Batch Protocol (BBP)?

The Between Batch Protocol (BBP) plays a crucial role in ensuring consistent roasting outcomes

The primary objective of implementing a Between Batch Protocol (BBP) is to ensure that the thermal energy of your roasting machine is reset from the previous batch to the beginning of the next batch.

You want to reset the thermal energy to get to the same starting conditions that you had for the last batch (in the same batch size).

To achieve this, it is essential to follow a specific procedure during the downtime between batches, taking multiple minutes to reset the thermal energy of the roasting machine.

Between Batch Timer

To help you with consistency, after stopping a roast, you can track the time elapsed between roasted batches.

This will help you stay within the time boundaries defined between-batch protocols.

The Between Batch timer starts from the moment you stop the roast, and will continue to count until the next roast is started.

You can reset the Between Batch Timer by clicking the Restart button.
This will reset the Between Batch Timer to 00:00.

Any data collected during the Between Batch Protocol (BBP) will be erased once the restart button is clicked and confirmed.

Upon abortion of a roast not yet recognized as started (indicated by the display of the Stop button instead of the Force start button), RI will continue tracking your previous roast's BBP until another roast is effectively started.

If you abort a roast after the roast has been recognized as started (by our Automatic start detection, or it has been manually started via the clicking of the Force start button), RI restarts the recording of the BBP.

The BBP timer and the BBP window will reset to 00:00 and start recording from the moment you aborted the roast.

Viewing the Between Batch Protocol (BBP)

There are two ways to view the Between Batch Protocol (BBP):

  1. During roasting in Roasting Intelligence (RI)
  2. During post-roast analysis via the online platform C-sar

Between Batch Protocol (BBP) Statistics

You can also access essential Between Batch Protocol (BBP) statistics recorded from your roasts, in addition to the Between Batch Protocol (BBP) curve(s) from the Roast Compare feature.

By following the steps below, you can access the Between Batch Protocol (BBP) Statistics via the online platform C-sar:

  1. Log in to the online platform C-sar.
  2. Navigate to Roasts on the main menu bar. You will be directed to the Roasts overview page.
  3. Choose one or more completed roasts that you want to compare from the list by selecting the corresponding checkbox next to the batches.
  4. Click on the Roast Compare button.
  5. To compare Between Batch Protocols (BBP) from your selected roasts, you may also scroll down to the Between Batch Protocol section from the Roast Compare to review the Statistics.
Select the Between Batch Protocol (BBP) statistics dropdown menu to tailor the data displayed in your BBP statistics section according to your preferences.

Time between batches

Measured by the Between Batch Timer, this metric tracks the time elapsed between the end of one roast and the beginning of the next roast.

Gas/Airflow changes (at specific Bean Temperature/Time)

The recorded percentage value, along with the timestamp of when it was registered, and the corresponding Bean Temperature at that moment, are key data points to track during the roasting process.

The lowest temperature

This includes the minimum temperature recorded during the downtime between batches, along with the timestamp indicating when the temperature was registered.

The highest temperature

Including the maximum temperature achieved during the recorded time between batches, along with a timestamp indicating when the temperature was registered.

Time to reach Start Temperature after the last gas change

The time taken to reach the starting temperature of the next roast after the last gas adjustment is made and recorded.

FAQs

What happens if BBP is not showing on the roast?
The Between Batch Protocol (BBP) is tracked from the moment the roast is stopped. The BBP window only displays when a Profile is selected from the Profile drop-down menu. If a Profile is deselected, the BBP window will disappear until another Profile is selected.

After saving the roast, the recorded BBP will continue to display in the BBP window from the Roasting Intelligence (RI) pre-roast screen for up to 15 minutes. After that time, you need to click on the Restart button to reset the timer; otherwise, BBP won't be showing on your roast.

Congratulations! You are ready to review your BBP data.
