How to use the set temperature and Gas control on Giesen roast machines
Table of Contents
Overview/Issue
When using Gas Replay, your Giesen machine has a built-in safety feature: if the Exhaust Temperature (Air Temperature) hits its setpoint, the machine takes control of the gas to prevent overheating. This overrides your Cropster profile and causes unwanted deviations.
⚠️ Terminology:
Please note that Giesen’s 'Air Temperature' is labeled as 'Exhaust Temperature' in the Roasting Intelligence. Similarly, 'Burner Power' is tracked as 'Gas' percentage within Cropster.
Instructions/Solution
You must switch your gas settings to manual for Gas Control to work in Roasting Intelligence:
- Log in to Roasting Intelligence.
- Navigate to the Controls.
- Select Show gas control. The Auto toggle button will appear on the top of the Gas control slider.
-
Make sure the Auto toggle button is off to use gas control. This way, you can control the gas freely as long as the temperature stays below the machine's setpoint.

💡 Good To Know:
If your setpoint is 220°C, the machine will block any gas increases that would push the exhaust temperature above that limit. To ensure you have full control throughout your roast, you can increase this limit up to a maximum of 250°C.
Slider control settings
When enabling the "reset slider controls" setting, keep this in mind:
Roasting Intelligence looks at the very first gas change of your reference roast to decide how to set your sliders for the next batch.
- If your reference roast started with the Auto toggle on, the sliders will automatically reset to Auto for every future roast using that profile, even if you turned it off halfway through the original roast.
-
If you want the sliders to start in Manual mode, choose a reference roast that began with the Auto toggle disabled:
- You can select a reference roast from existing roasts.
- You can create a new roast where the Auto toggle button was disabled at the start and set it as a reference for your profile.
