Entering the unlock code

The Giesen roaster needs to be unlocked before you can connect the machine to Cropster.

  1. If you haven't yet, you must purchase your unlock code from Giesen.
unlock code. For questions regarding purchasing the unlock code, please reach out to Giesen directly via support@giesencoffeeroasters.eu.
  2. Follow the instructions in this video to unlock your Giesen machine:

  3. Unlocking the Giesen was successful if the Giesen display says Enabled.

Setting up a connection

  1. Connect the network cable to your roaster's Ethernet port.
  2. Connect the other end to the computer's Ethernet port.
  3. Proceed with the Network settings.

Network settings

When the roaster is connected to the computer directly, you need to set up a Static IP address.

Static IP address configuration - Windows 10, 11

  1. Navigate to the Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center or Network and Internet > Network Sharing Center.
  2. Click Change adapter settings.
  3. Identify the Network connection item that refers to the connection to your machine and select that item.
If you are not sure which icon refers to the roast machine, simply disconnect and reconnect the Ethernet cable, and check which icon changes its status.
  4. Right-click on WiFi or Local Area Connection.
  5. Click Properties.
  6. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  7. Click Properties.
  8. Select the Use the following IP Address option.
  9. Enter the specific IP Address for your roaster and replace the fourth number block with 42:
    • IP Address (for W1/W6/W15): 192.168.2.42
    • IP Address (for W30/W45/W60): 192.168.3.42
Important: The first three blocks of the IP address need to match the IP address of your roaster, as identified via the roaster's panel.
    • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  10. Leave the rest blank.
  11. Click the OK button to submit your changes.
  12. Proceed with the Roasting Intelligence (RI) Setup.

Static IP address configuration - macOS

  1. Navigate to > System Preferences > Network
  2. Identify the Network connection item that refers to the connection to your machine and select that item.
If you are not sure which icon refers to the roast machine, simply disconnect and reconnect the Ethernet cable, and check which icon changes its status.
  3. Click on "Details..."
  4. Open the TCP/IP section and choose Manually next to Configure IPv4
  5. Enter the specific IP Address for your roaster and replace the fourth number block with 42:
In this example, the IP address of the machine is 192.168.2.180.
    • IP Address (for W1/W6/W15): 192.168.2.42
    • IP Address (for W30/W45/W60): 192.168.3.42
Important: The first three blocks of the IP address need to match the IP address of your roaster, as identified via the roaster's panel
    • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  6. Click the OK button to confirm the changes.
  7. Proceed with the Roasting Intelligence (RI) Setup.

192.168.2.180

W30/W45/W60

192.168.3.180

  1. Select the Drum speed unit according to Giesen's displayed Drum speed unit (i.e. HZ, RPM).
We recommend to adjust the Drum speed unit to your preferred unit both on the RI, and the Giesen display. Please reach out to directly to Giesen for assistance changing the unit on the Giesen display.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Click Save to finalize the changes.

After saving the changes, RI will automatically restart. If the setup was successful, you will see the temperature values displayed on the right-hand side of the RI screen following the restart.

Learn more about the Roasting Intelligence (RI) Preferences and roasting with the Control and Replay Assist features.

Set a roast with recorded Drum speed data as the Reference and begin replaying your recorded Drum speed changes.

Troubleshooting

If RI indicates No source connected and/or you cannot see any measurements, please check the following:

  1. Is the static IP address configured correctly?
  2. Is the, according to the machine type, correct IP address entered?
  3. Is the manufacturing year of the roast machine between June 2014 and January 2018?

If the RI indicates Source connected but the measurements on the right hand side show -1.

  • The Giesen roaster is not yet unlocked.
Navigate to to the Entering the unlock code section of this manual for more information.

When using Replay Assist:

  • Do not use any other temperature controlling software in parallel. Any gas/airflow/drum speed changes from a concurrent client disable Replay assist for the remainder of the roast.
  • We recommend replaying (reference) roasts with logged drum speed data that matches your Giesen's currently set drum speed unit.
  • If your Giesen machine is set to rpm (or Hz), we recommend that the logged drum speed data for the reference be also recorded in the same drum speed unit.
The RI will replay the values from the reference under the assumption that the unit of the reference is the same as the unit currently configured on the Giesen machine.

Congratulations! You have successfully set up the Cropster Roasting Intelligence.
