Setting up a connection

  1. Diedrich IR-series roast machines (w/ Z2.5 automation) will need to be equipped with an Ethernet switch.
The Ethernet switch must have a minimum of 3 ports.
  2. Diedrich uses a Stride SE2-SW5U Ethernet switch.
It requires an additional power supply with wired connections. Other switches or routers may be used as well, but might not fulfill industry standards.

We recommend an Ethernet switch over a router.

An Ethernet switch is typically ready to use right out of the box, while a router may require configuration before it can be used.

The EDS-205 Series Ethernet switch is also rated to operate at temperatures ranging from -10 to 60°C and is rugged enough for harsh industrial environments.

This schematic serves as a reference of the connection for IR-series roast machines before an Ethernet switch (Stride SE2-SW5U) has been installed:

  1. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from LAN2 (refer to the dotted line), then use the now-free end from the Ethernet cable to connect the MicroLogix 1100 PLC to the Ethernet switch.
  2. Connect the HMI touchscreen to the Ethernet switch.
  3. Connect the Ethernet switch to your computer (Cropster).
This schematic serves as a reference for the connection for IR-series roast machines after a Stride SE2-SW5U Ethernet switch (with 5 ports) has been installed.
  4. Proceed with the Network settings.

Network settings

Static IP address configuration - Windows 7, 8, 10

  1. Navigate to the Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center or Network and Internet > Network Sharing Center.
  2. Click Change adapter settings.
  3. Identify the network adapter icon that refers to the roast machine connection.
If you are not sure which icon refers to the roast machine, simply disconnect and reconnect the Ethernet cable, and check which icon changes its status.
  4. Right-click on WiFi or Local Area Connection.
  5. Click Properties.
  6. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
  7. Click Properties.
  8. Select the Use the following IP Address option.
  9. Enter the specific IP Address for your roaster and replace the fourth number block with 42:
    • IP Address:192.168.251.42
    • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  10. Leave the rest blank.
  11. Click the OK button to submit your changes.
  12. Proceed with the Roasting Intelligence (RI) Setup.

Static IP address configuration - macOS

Creating a new network location

  1. Navigate to> System Settings > Network.
  2. Identify the Network connection item that refers to the connection to your machine and select that item.
If you are not sure which icon refers to the roast machine, simply disconnect and reconnect the Ethernet cable, and check which icon changes its status.
  3. Navigate to the "..." icon > Locations.
  4. Select Edit Locations.
  5. Create a new location by clicking the + icon and name it after your machine, e.g., Diedrich.
  6. Click Done to submit your changes.

The status next to the network connection item will change to Not connected. After setting the Static IP address, the status will say Connected again.

Configuring the static IP address

  1. Make sure the Network connection item that refers to the connection to your machine is still selected.
  2. Open the TCP/IP section and choose Manually next to Configure IPv4.
  3. Enter the specific IP Address for your roaster
    • IP Address:192.168.251.42
    • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  4. Click the OK button to confirm the changes.
  5. Proceed with the Roasting Intelligence (RI) Setup.

Establishing a connection to the machine

The images below are for reference and may vary slightly from your screen.

Before you begin configuring your roast machine, ensure that you have added it via the online platform C-sar.

  1. SelectPreferences > Machine > Configuration
  2. To choose the Roast machine, click on the dropdown menu in the Machine section.
  3. Click the + Add connector option to choose your connector from the dropdown list.
  4. Select Diedrich PLC from the dropdown.
  5. Click Select to add the connector.
  6. Navigate to the Machine > Measurements tab. All supported measurements will be displayed.
  7. To activate the measurements, simply click the green toggle button.
  8. Enable the desired measurements and choose Diedrich PLC as the connector type, except for Exhaust, Inlet, and Drum temperatures.
Depending on your roast machine's model, year, and the Diedrich sensor package included with the machine, you may or may not be able to track temperatures for Exhaust, Inlet, and/or Drum.
  9. (Optional) Change the order of the measurements by using theDrag and Drop icon and move it into position.
  10. Navigate to the Machine > Controls tab.
  11. To activate the controls, simply click the green toggle button. Enable the controls you wish to activate.
  12. Choose Diedrich PLC as the connector type.

The default for Diedrich roasters is: 192.168.251.202
  17. Click OK.
  18. Click Save to finalize the changes.

After saving the changes, RI will automatically restart. If the setup was successful, you will see the temperature values displayed on the right-hand side of the RI screen following the restart.

On Diedrich IR models, Airflow control is limited to 0%, 50% and 100% only. Any airflow settings in between won't be taken into account.

When controlling gas and airflow from Roasting Intelligence (RI), the values on the Diedrich HMI change with a delay of several seconds; this only affects the display of the values.

The roast machine reacts to gas and airflow changes from RI, usually within 1-2 seconds.

Troubleshooting

If the RI indicates No sources connected and/or you cannot see any measurements, please check the following:

  • Is the static IP address configured correctly?
  • Does the IP address of your roaster differ from the default?
  • Is the Ethernet cable connected to the switch or router of the roasting machine?
Do not connect it to the Ethernet port of the roaster's HMI (touch screen).

If the RI indicates Sources connected, but you cannot see any measurements, please check the following:

  • Is the Diedrich roast machine "Cropster Ready"?
This is indicated by the "Cropster Replay" button on the HMI display.
  • Do the roast machine's PLC and HMI software versions match the required versions (ending in "_C")?

The Cropster Replay button is only shown when the roast machine is in Manual mode.

Auto mode will turn the Cropster Replay button off, making the button not visible.

Are the control sliders unresponsive?
If the gas and airflow values are shown, but the roast machine does not react to changes in the control sliders in RI, verify that the Cropster Replay button is switched on.

Diedrich roast machines w/ sensor package

Depending on your roast machine's model, year, and the Diedrich sensor package included with the machine, you may or may not be able to track temperatures for Exhaust, Inlet, and/or Drum.
