Diedrich DR-models with Semi-auto platform & CR-models with ZIII automation software - Roasting Intelligence (RI) Setup (beta)

This manual covers the connection of Diedrich DR-model and CR-model roast machines with Semi-auto platform or ZIII automation to Cropster's Roasting Intelligence.

If you haven't been invited to participate in the beta program for this integration, but you are interested in participating and testing the feature, please sign up here.

Beta means that the features are being tested with a select group of users to help us identify minor flaws under everyday conditions that we cannot reproduce internally. Therefore, it will be necessary that you share feedback with us and let us know whenever you come across some unexpected behavior.

Specifications

Requirements

  • Ethernet cable

  • Network router with DHCP server capability
  • CR-series only: Cropster Replay Assist Ready*

*A Diedrich is Cropster Replay Assist Ready when a "Cropster Replay" button is shown from the machine's HMI display.

Note: All DR-series machines are equipped with Semi-Auto and are compatible with the control of Gas and Airflow.

Supported measurements

Setting up a connection

Your Diedrich roast machine may have a rear-end ethernet port to connect the ethernet cable from the machine to a network router or computer.

If your machine does not have a rear-end ethernet port, use the HMI display's LAN1 port instead.

Via the network router

  1. Connect the network cable to your roaster's rear-end (or LAN1) ethernet port.
  2. Connect the other end to your network router's ethernet port.

Note: This connection requires a network router (DHCP server). Most home routers will have the DHCP server turned on by default.

Proceed with the Network settings.

Identifying IP address

Once the Diedrich has been connected with a network router, an IP address has been assigned to the roaster.

  1. Go to the Diedrich's HMI display.
  2. Go to the setup screen and press the Refresh IP address button
  3. You will need to refer to the LAN1 IP address.
You will need to input the LAN1 IP address from RI at a later step.
The LAN1 and LAN2 IP addressess may differ from the image.

Continue with DHCP configuration for Windows or Mac.

DHCP configuration - Windows 7, 8, 10

  1. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center or enter ncpa.cpl in the Windows search field.
  2. On the left panel, click the Change adapter settings link.
  3. Identify the network adapter-icon that refers to the roast machine connection.
If you are not sure which icon refers to the roast machine, simply disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable and check which icon changes its status.
  4. Right-click the network adapter and select Properties.
  5. Select the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option and click the Properties button.
  6. Select Obtain an IP address automatically option.
  7. Click the OK button to submit your changes.

Proceed with the Roasting Intelligence (RI) Setup.

DHCP configuration - MacOS

  1. Go to  > System Preferences > Network
  2. Identify the Network connection item that refers to the connection to your machine and select that item.
If you are not sure which icon refers to the roast machine, simply disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable and check which icon changes its status.
  3. Open the Configure IPv4 drop-down menu and verify Using DHCP is selected.
  4. If you've made any changes, click the Apply button to confirm the changes.

Proceed with the Roasting Intelligence (RI) Setup.

Roasting Intelligence (RI) Setup

Installing the Roasting Intelligence (RI) software

  1. Download the Roasting Intelligence from https://download-beta.cropster.com/
  2. The Cropster installer leads you through all the installation steps.
  3. Open the RI by double-clicking the Cropster icon on the desktop
  4. Enter your username and password.
They are the email address and password you were given to access your Cropster account on c-sar.cropster.com
  5. Check the Remember credentials box if you want to be able to run the RI offline.
  6. Click the Login button.

Establishing a connection to the machine

  1. Open Roasting Intelligence (RI)

  2. Go to Account > Preferences > Machine tab.

  3. Select Diedrich PLC from the drop-down menu for all measurements.

  4. Click the Gear icon to open up the the Diedrich PLC settings:

    • Version: Select DR/CR series - Semi-auto/ZIII

    • Hostname/IP address: type in the LAN1 IP address as shown by the Diedrich's HMI display.

  5. Click OK, then click Save to confirm the changes. The RI requires a restart to apply the settings.

Troubleshooting

If the RI indicates No sources connected and/or you cannot see any measurements, please check the following:

  • Is the machine connected via the rear-end Ethernet port, or the HMI's LAN1 Ethernet port?
  • Is the machine connected to a network router?
    • Is the network router DHCP-capable?
    • Did you verify the LAN1 IP address, and input it as shown from the Diedrich's HMI?

Connecting via DHCP router

The router uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to communicate with the Diedrich HMI. Because IP address are only leased (or borrowed), if you lose connection from the RI it is likely that:

  • The LAN1 IP address changed upon adjusting the connection into the router.
  • The lease time for the IP address reached its end, and hence a new IP address may have been assigned to the LAN1 port.
If you lose connection to the Diedrich, it will be important to check that the LAN1 IP address has not changed since the last time it was inputted into the RI's Machine settings.
