How to install an independent probe for Cropster
This article will explain how to install an independent probe.
Table of Contents
The instructions detailed here are for the Cropster compression fitting, designed to secure our standard 1/8" and 3/16" diameter probes.
You can order the compression fitting and probe from Cropster.
- If you are located in the European Union (EU): https://shop-eur.cropster.com/
- If you are located outside of the European Union (USD): https://shop-usd.cropster.com/
Position the new probe on the same side as the current one, but keep it far enough away to avoid obstructing bean flow or trapping beans between them.
The probe location must not interfere with the movement of the internal rotating paddles. Always factor in the barrel's rotation direction during installation.

Required tools
- Drill with sufficient torque
-
11/32" Drill bit (.85cm), for use with steel

-
1/8" (3,18mm) tap size with 27 threads per inch. The tap is used to create the threading for the compression fitting, which has an NPT of 1/8".

Installation
Once you have selected a good location to place the probe, you may begin the work.
- Drill bits tend to wander when you start a hole. To prevent this, first measure and mark the location. Then, use a center punch and hammer to create a small dimple; this indentation guides the drill bit tip precisely when you begin drilling.
- Drill the hole. You may want to set something in the cooling tray to catch dust and minimize cleanup.
- Create the threading with the tap. Use a hand tool such as a wrench or socket wrench to turn the tap. Turn slowly to create nice, clean threads.
- Screw in the compression fitting until snug.
-
Place the probe in the compression fitting. You decide how much of the probe you want to enter the machine. Once placed, tighten down the outside hexagonal screw until the probe cannot move.
Make sure that the paddles in the drum do not interfere.
