What is a double-blind cupping session? Phase 1: Preparing the session (Outside of Cropster - Person A) Phase 2: Setting up the session (In Cropster - Person B)

What is a double-blind cupping session?

A double-blind cupping session is a controlled evaluation where neither the participant tasting the samples nor the participant setting up the session knows which is which.

The double-blind cupping session requires two people and consists of two phases.

The first person (referred to as Person A in the text) selects the coffees for the cupping session, and the second person (referred to as Person B in the text) only gets the Cropster ID tags that the first person has chosen without any origin information.

With this limited information, the second person generates the cupping codes, and as a result, neither of the two participants sees the basic coffee information (only the blind labels). This gold standard for unbiased evaluations is built into Cropster.

Phase 1: Preparing the session (Outside of Cropster - Person A)

Person A has to conduct the following steps:

  1. Select the samples to be cupped and put the samples on the cupping table.
  2. Label each sample with the related ID tag (e.g., PR-xxxx, SG-xxxx) only.
  3. After that, Person A must leave the room, and Person B takes over.

What is an ID tag?

Cropster automatically assigns ID tags for every green lot, roast lot, sample, and blend. ID tags are required to provide internal traceability across the processes within our system, and for this reason, cannot be changed.

You can find the ID tags on the (Green) Inventory, Samples, and/or Roast overview pages.

Phase 2: Setting up the session (In Cropster - Person B)

Please note that you can only create a session if it has at least one sample, and you also cannot edit the session at a later stage.

Person B has to conduct the following steps:

  1. Log in to the online platform C-sar.
  2. Navigate to Quality on the main menu bar and select Cupping sessions.
  3. Click +Add cupping session.
  4. Select Double-blind cupping.
  5. Enter the following details:
    • General
      • Schedule for: Select the date and time.
      • Name
      • Sheet
      • Lab
      • Category
      • Labels
    • Samples: You can select samples by clicking on the dropdown or manually entering the full ID tag.
In the double-blind cupping mode, Cropster shows only the ID tag without a lot name.
  6. Click Save & Next.
  7. Ready for cupping. You can view which ID tag is attached to which sample code.
  8. Replace the ID tag labels accordingly with the sample code labels.
  9. Open Cropster Cup in a new tab.
  10. Click on the Refresh button.

  11. The newest session appears at the bottom of the page. Scroll down to your session [Qs-xxxx] and click Enter session.

  12. Start cupping.
