Overview

The Smart goals feature helps you monitor roast consistency in real-time. This article explains how to enable the feature in Roasting Intelligence and customize your display to track specific roasting data points.

Feature components

The feature is built around two key elements:

  1. Reference parameters: Key data points captured when roasting the Reference (such as Charge temperature, First crack, or Duration).
  2. Roast goals: Goals created on the online platform C-sar.
    There are two types:
    • Relative goals: Ranges based on a reference parameters (e.g., “Meet the reference”).
    • Absolute goals: Ranges with fixed upper and lower boundaries, independent of a reference.

Instructions

Enabling Smart goals in Roasting Intelligence

Before customizing your view, you must activate the feature in your Roasting Intelligence settings.

  1. Log in to Roasting Intelligence.
  2. Navigate to Preferences > Smart features.
  3. Locate the Parameters and Goals box section.
  4. Select the feature checkbox and click Save.

Customizing your Smart goals display

Once enabled, the feature appears in the top right corner of the screen.
The “No parameters or smart goals to be displayed” message appears if:

  •  No data is selected.
  • The selected Profile has no Reference or the reference has no value for the selected parameter.
  • No roast goals were created in C-sar for the selection.

To better understand why you are not seeing information displayed, or why a selected data is showing a warning icon in its box, you can click the ℹ️ button at the top of the feature.

  1. Click Customize in the top-right corner of the feature box.
  2. Use the Search field to find specific data points.
  3. Once you make a selection, parameters and goals will populate based on the selected Profile.
    • Parameters appear if the Profile has a Reference.
    • Goals appear if they are assigned to the Profile in C-sar.
  4. Use the Drag and drop icon on the left to reorder how items appear.
  5. Select one of the three buttons to enable a data point as a parameter, a relative goal, or an absolute goal.
  6. (Optional) Click the Column button next to Customize to toggle between a one-column and a two-column layout.

Understanding goal statuses

Each goal box provides visual feedback on your roast progress.

  • Header: Displays the name and type icon. Hover over the icons to view the tooltips.
  • Values: Shows the current value (updated in real-time) and the parameter value.
  • Ranger Bar: Visually indicates if the current value is below, within, or over the boundaries.
  • Status indicators:
    • Monitoring: The goal cannot be evaluated yet (e.g., Duration before the roast starts).
    • Met: The value is within the defined range.
    • Failed: The value is outside the defined range.

Once a live Smart goal reaches the context or event of its final evaluation (e.g., Charge temperature when the roast starts), the box is greyed out and the border color changes to match the final status.

Smart goals during production

The table outlines the workflow where roasting metrics transition from monitoring to evaluation:

  • 👀 Monitoring: Happens during the Roast to prevent errors in real-time.
  • ⏱️ Evaluation: Happens mostly Pre and Post-roast to verify that specific parameters were met and the final product adheres to defined quality benchmarks.

Examples:

  • Since comments can be added, edited, and deleted during both roast and post-roast, Smart goals for First crack and Dev. time are monitored during both roast and post-roast.
  • Since information can be edited using the form fields during post-roast, Smart goals for Start weight and Roast values are evaluated post-roast based on the form field entries.

Troubleshooting visibility issues

If the feature remains empty after customization, verify the following:

  • Reference assignments: parameters and relative goals require the selected Profile to have an assigned Reference roast with valid data for those points.
  • Online platform configuration: Ensure the goals are created on the online platform C-sar and are not restricted to other Profiles.
  • Profile priority: Goals assigned to a specific Profile take precedence over general goals.
