What is the "Temperature-based auto-start and end detection"? Enabling the "Temperature-based auto-start and end detection"

What is the "Temperature-based auto-start and end detection"?

The Temperature-based auto-start and end (formerly known as "Automatic start and end detection") is a feature of the Roasting Intelligence (RI5).

During the roasting process, the start and end of the roast are crucial moments that determine the quality and flavor of the beans.

The Temperature-based auto-start and end detection feature in Roasting Intelligence (RI) ensures that these moments are accurately detected. When the drum is filled or unloaded with beans, a significant temperature drop occurs, signaling the start or end of the roast.

Enabling the "Temperature-based auto-start and end detection"

By following the steps below, you can easily enable the "Temperature-based auto-start and end detection":

  1. Log in to the Roasting Intelligence (RI5).
  2. Navigate to thePreferences on the bottom left side of the screen.
  3. Navigate to the Roasting tab and select Smart features.
  4. Scroll down to the Smart detection section.
  5. Click on the checkbox next to the Temperature-based auto-start and end of a roast.
  6. Save the changes.

Set values for what temperature drop will start your roast timer:

  • Start detection: When you set the temperature to 7ºC/13ºF, the roast timer will activate once the temperature consistently remains at 7ºC/13ºF for at least 30 seconds. This marks the beginning of the roasting process.
  • End detection: When a second temperature drop is detected, the Roasting Intelligence (RI) identifies this as the end of the roast. For example, if you set the threshold to 3ºC/5ºF, the roast timer will register the end of the roasting process once the temperature consistently decreases by 3ºC/5ºF over 5 seconds.

When the Temperature-based automatic start and end detection is enabled, make sure that the bean temperature is stable (not decreasing) the moment you release the beans into the drum.

In case of your roast machine's temperature readings display noise or electrical interference and your temperature is "jumping around", the Roasting Intelligence (RI) may recognize the start/end prematurely.

This occurs because the start/end threshold is met within the specified time interval (e.g., Start: 30 sec, End: 5 sec).

Congratulations! You learned how the Temperature-based auto-start and end detection works.
